Message from the playwright

“I am pleased that Sawitri Theatre have chosen to present the North American premiere of an updated version of the very first full length play I wrote in 1985. It is a play that is extensively performed by colleges and schools all over India because it apparently portrays the goings on in most South Asian families. However, once the actors and director are into rehearsals, some of them begin to feel uncomfortable with many of the choices my characters make. It is this ease and unease with the play that, in my opinion, keeps the play relevant to us in India even after 27 years. I am excited now that Sawitri will give the play a wider reach, thousands of miles away from the place of the plays origin. We South Asians always take a bit of home wherever we go. Sawitri now brings to Canadian audiences a small slice of India’s contemporary drama.”
