THEME – FROM MY GRANDMA’s KITCHEN

A heart-warming theme that pulled at everyone’s heartstrings, with food that was simple, wholesome and innovative though not necessarily labour-saving, as recipes from Grandma’s times were presented. Nostalic poetry by Mayank Bhatt, and food that was finger-licking good made for an excellent afternoon.

A very Happy and Wonderful 2013 to all! This message is rather belated, I know, but here are the bare details.
I had been wanting to launch a festival around food for a while. Food brings people together, generates warmth and gets conversations flowing, apart from their nutritive, life-sustaining value. After much thought and some discussion with friends and family, on Sunday 19th February 2012 we launched The Weird Food Festival at the Sawant residence. It was also Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s birthday that day, so rather a fitting celebration for the Sawants to host. The festival was a great success!!!
The first pilot group consisted of the Athales, Dates, Kinis, Shahs and of course the Sawants.
The foods were weird, strange, rustic, off-beat, etc. the kind you don’t usually make when you are entertaining, or the kind you can not walk into a restaurant and order. Each food item had a story to be shared. There were reasons for its popularity, or lack thereof. Its socio-economic, geographic orgins were discussed as were the ingredients.
I had made ‘mason’ which Prakash tried to google, with hilarious results.
We now move to the second Pilot to be held as above. What foods will feature this time? Who is going to attend?
There is a sub theme of “From my Grandma’s kitchen…” The food item could be a food that your grandma used to make, either frequently or on special occasions. A dish that she was phenomenal at, and has a strong meaning for you. Why Grandma and not Grandpa? It could be Grandpa if you had one that cooked. Mine specialized in eating not cooking.
